Back when my wife and I were graduate students in Illinois, we would get by on Saturday mornings with samples of Swedish IGA and Swedish meatballs and meat rolls for happy hour at the local pub. We could both make a beer last for three or four waves of free aperitif snacks. Disposable income was more of a concept at the time than a reality. Needless to say, a bouquet of cut flowers on the kitchen table was a bit rare.

True, freshly cut flowers do not pay the rent. They don’t cover the dentist’s bills and they certainly don’t pay for school supplies. But they’re doing something that other things can’t. They provide a daily dose of joy and a hamster wheel distraction from the brain. In short, cut flowers, whether bought on the way home from the office or freshly cut from your own garden, give you a boost that’s hard to replicate in other ways.

As an expression of beauty and love, roses have been used in many myths and fairy tales. The flower is a metaphor for emotion, beauty, passion and true love by romantic writers and poets. When it comes to colored roses, there are even striped and spiked varieties available in solid colors.

Over 2,000 varieties of roses can be found year round, and many, like those offered by Wedding Design & Flowers by supernovaweddngdesign.co.uk, are affordable. Not all roses are scent, although roses are associated with luxurious scents. Three types of roses are most famous for wedding flowers:

  • Hybrid tea roses – the classic, uniformly shaped commercial roses typically seen at your local florist
  • Spray Roses – a rose with five to ten small buds on each stem and a “natural, garden-grown” look
  • Garden roses – expensive and old-fashioned varieties with bushy, open heads and delicious scents

Tulips are known to be associated with the Netherlands, but this flower is actually native to Persia. The tulip can be used as a wedding choice because it represents love and happiness. The flower is grown in various shades, including white and cream, pastels, pink, yellow, and peach. Although rare varieties can be expensive, the most common tulips are very affordable for much of the year. The tulip can be used in almost any detail at a wedding, from bouquets and boutonnieres to table settings. Three main varieties are commonly used:

  • Dutch tulips – typically seen in neighborhood florists and in the gardens
  • French tulips – expensive and elegant, with extra long stems and large, tapered flowers
  • Parrot tulips – known for their ruffled and striped petals in intense colors

In the language of flowers, the arum lily is known as “magnificent beauty” because of its elegant trumpet-shaped flower. In addition to twentieth-century photography, the calla lily has been depicted in works of art nouveau and decor. A large-headed variety with a long, smooth stem is suitable for large arrangements or presentation-style bouquets, while a miniature version is ideal for small arrangements. Calla lilies are available in many colors, from cream ivory to yellow, orange and dark purple.

Lily of the valley is also known as the “ladder to the sky” because of its small, bell-shaped flowers. The flower is linked to the goddess of spring in Norse mythology, but you may remember it from Kate’s wedding bouquet. It is available most of the year, although it is more expensive in the spring. While lily of the valley might be your dream, a more affordable alternative is to use just a few stems to make a bouquet or centerpiece arrangement with its pleasant scent and delicate texture. Most people are familiar with the white variety, but there is also a rare pinkish-pink variety.

Having a bushy head and intense shades of blue, burgundy, pink and purple, the hydrangea represented “vanity” in the Victorian language. But don’t worry, if you love hydrangeas, you’re not vain. As it grows, one of the more popular strains changes color from bubble gum pink to sky blue, depending on the acid level of the soil. A stalk or two of this shrub flower completes arrangements and bouquets, and a few sprigs make a charming boutonniere. There are shades of white, green, pink, burgundy, and blue in hydrangea.

Peony is valued for its delicacy and impressive beauty. Cultivated in Asia for over a thousand years, the peony comes in two main types, tree peonies and herbaceous peonies. A bouquet of peonies can be stunning, and the flower can also be used to create beautiful arrangements. Flowering can be found from late spring to early summer, but can be imported in the fall.

Are you looking for a cheaper alternative to roses or peonies? The buttercup is a marriage-ready parent of the buttercup and has multi-petalled petals. The flower was first seen by Westerners in the Far East around the 13th century. Wearing ranunculus is telling your partner, in Victorian flower language, “I am in love with your charms.” Buttercup is a natural for bridal or bridesmaid bouquets and can be found in many colors.

The delicate white Stephanotis is an obvious choice for weddings because of its Victorian significance of marital bliss. Each vine must be individually wired or placed on a single stand before it can be laid out. One of the most traditional things a bride can wear is a bouquet of stephanotis flowers. It is available year round and moderately priced, but you will have to pay for the labor of your florist.

The English have a love affair with sweet peas, imported from Sicily to England in 1699. It is an old-fashioned favorite in bouquets for the bride and her bridesmaids because of its candy scent. and its ruffled flowers. Sweet peas come in many colors, from white to intense pinks and purples, and its scent can be substantial.

A sea of beautiful flowers filling your wedding venue can be part of your dream wedding vision. You are probably very excited to start planning your wedding after seeing so many inspiring images of flowered wedding banquet halls on wedding blogs and wedding websites.

Dressed in black dresses or sneakers, modern brides boldly break traditions to add unique touches to their weddings. More recently, we noticed that the bouquet of dried flowers eclipsed the freshly cut flowers and took center stage on the day of the ceremony. For example, artist Jordan Casteel, whose portrait of Aurora James appeared on the September 2020 cover of Vogue, recently tied the knot in a personalized Batsheva dress while holding a cheerful arrangement of pink dried flowers by Farmgirl Flowers. Not to be outdone, her groom, David Schulze, looked equally sharp with pieces of preserved flowers pinned to the lapel of his blazer.

In the past, dried flowers were seen as not being as vibrant as their fresh-cut counterparts, but that is all changing thanks to the beautifully designed arrangements by brands like UrbanStems and talented artisans setting up shops on Etsy. There are plenty of options that look just as cheerful in hot pink and cheerful yellow hues. The biggest advantage of selecting preserved flowers: there is no need to worry about them wilting on your wedding day. Plus, they’ll last long after the big day.

Lady Gaga’s boyfriend Michael Polansky couldn’t be physically with the pop star on her 35th birthday in Italy due to COVID-19 travel restrictions, so he gifted her the next best thing: a life-size flower arrangement larger than her, or also Gaga described it, “all the flowers in Rome.”

Gaga, who is currently filming Ridley Scott’s crime biographical film in Italy Gucci House, shared a photo of her birthday surprise from Polansky on Instagram. “When your boyfriend sends you all the flowers in Rome for your birthday,” she wrote alongside a picture of herself wrapping her arms around the giant bouquet. “I love you honey I can’t wait to be home with you and our dogs, that’s all I need.”

It was a great gesture, to say the least.

The couple have been dating for over a year, after they were first seen kissing on New Years Eve in 2019. And although they spent much of their time together in their forties , they managed to squeeze in a few public exits – including President Biden’s Inauguration.

Last week, a source said Entertainment tonight that Gaga is “super in love” with Polansky. “She told her friends that she wanted to complete a few projects and then focus on the installation,” the insider said. “Gaga wants to have children someday and sees a future with Michael.” Looks like their relationship just keeps getting stronger.

To start the year, LEGO has expanded its line of home decor kits with a pair of creations in its Botanical Garden collection. And with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, today we’re taking a look at the Bouquet of Flowers Kit, which offers a brick version of a classic gift for the big day. With plenty of detail and eye-catching techniques, be sure to head below for a closer look at the new LEGO flower bouquet and all of our thoughts on the unique exhibit.

Practice with the LEGO flower bouquet

As one of LEGO’s first additions to its new Botanical Garden collection, its recent bouquet stacks up to 756 pieces that put 15 flowers together. There’s everything from roses and snapdragons here to poppies, asters, daisies and herbs stacking up to make the unique brick home decor piece.

Each of the flowers shares a similar stem design, with one of two techniques. Some of the heavier builds use a series of connected Technic pieces that stack together to achieve the appropriate length. But there’s also a more simplistic design that takes advantage of the green Technic axles for a similar effect. The variation between the two styles here is certainly appreciated and offers the overall vibes you would get from real plants. We are therefore off to a fairly solid start.

Realistic, in a uniquely LEGO way

To talk about the actual flowers included in the LEGO bouquet here, there are 15 global versions with seven unique designs to achieve the different types. But since there are multiple versions of the same flower, this kit has quite a bit of repetitions while bringing it all together. That aside, the assembly experience certainly lives up to the more adult-centric emphasis here with each of the patterns layering foliage and petals to create the intricate botanical constructs.

There are a lot of interesting pieces used here that come in even more unique colors. You will find green surfboards, pterodactyl wings, and of course, real figurine flower elements that all combine to achieve its detailed appearance. LEGO even includes some of its sustainable Plants from Plants elements here, which is certainly a fitting touch.

Saying that the LEGO flower bouquet is a realistic build might be a bit of a stretch, but the whole model is certainly as accurate as it gets from the blocky stand. The different scales and construction techniques perfectly draw on the intended botanical theme and fully meet the mission of bringing you new brick home decor.

Another plus here is that the entire nature of the kit means you can tailor things to your liking. As well as being able to arrange the arrangement however you like, you have the option of dividing the LEGO flowers into multiple bouquets or leaving out some of the inclusions as you see fit.

But overall, the final product of the LEGO Flower Bouquet achieves a fantastic look that is quite eye-catching. The bright colors pair well and create a truly unique brick home decor piece that quite faithfully replicates a real life bouquet from LEGO.

When you think of Valentine’s Day traditions, red roses are probably at the top of the list, along with a box of chocolates or a meal at a cozy restaurant. But no one needs to remember that this year has been anything but traditional. Maybe this Valentine’s Day is a good excuse to lean into the non-traditional and try something new. Uh, not fresh, as the case may be.

Dried flowers have made a comeback in recent years, in part thanks to their generally lower carbon footprint than their fresh counterparts, which are often shipped long distances in refrigerated trucks or planes.

“A lot of people have a preconceived idea of what dried flowers are,” said Rebecca O’Donnell, owner of The Quiet Botanist, a botanical apothecary and dried flower shop in Hudson, NY. These are not the dusty, drab arrangements of the past. Instead, they all aim to show off the lush textures that result from the drying process.

If you want to make your own bouquet, you can purchase dried flowers at many local flower shops, online from specialty companies, or directly from small growers like Sarah Haven of Catkin Flowers in Brunswick, Maine. Ms. Haven’s flowers go straight to a dark barn to dry after harvest, keeping the colors as vivid as possible without dyeing them. She got into the business after two friends asked her to do their wedding flowers. “They wanted something that would last longer than their wedding day,” Ms. Haven said.

The romantic longevity of a dried bouquet is just a bonus. Ms. O’Donnell points out that flowers can also change over time. “You can be creative and experiment,” she said. “In the spring you can add fresh flowers. You can add a little water and then let them decompose a bit. And to combat the inevitable dust, she said, “just use a hair dryer on very low speed or take them out and give them a shake.”

Worried that this is not correct? Its good. “If it’s a bit undone and not perfect, it’s more interesting,” Ms. O’Donnell said.

Your local flower shop may stock dried flowers, but there are also several online stores with a wide variety. (If you don’t feel like trying your hand at a bouquet, there are many local and online stores that sell cute pre-made bouquets and can ship them as well.)

Start with five different elements and several stems of each. Aim for at least one of each of these four categories: tall, full, or soft rooms; delicate and textured stems; a bold statement flower; and herbs or greens as fillers. Gypsophila, or baby’s breath, is a favorite, or try caspia for a slightly more structured look. Rabbit tail grass or globe amaranth will give interesting shapes, and protea and banksia make nice statement options. Grocery stores often sell eucalyptus stalks, which are popular in dried arrangements and smell great, or Ms. O’Donnell suggests you can even look for fillers like cattails or wild herbs that grow in your area.

As a guide, your tallest pieces should measure about one to one and a half times the height of your vase.

Your selection of dried flowers and herbs

A pair of very sharp scissors

Tape

A vase

1. Use the masking tape to create a grid on the top of the vase. You will be placing the rods inside the grid, which will help your arrangement to stay in place.

2. Start with some of your tall, fuller stems to roughly define the shape you want your bouquet to take. If you find your stems to be really brittle, Ms. Haven suggests spraying them with a spray bottle while you work to give them a little more flexibility.

3. Add greenery that is similar or slightly shorter in height than your tall, full stems.

4. Place a few stems for your statement flowers. Try to place the first low enough in the vase and avoid perfect symmetry to keep things natural and modern. Play and see what looks good to you.

5. Look for empty spaces and add rods as needed.

The designer of the LEGO Botanical Collection 10280 Flower Bouquet revealed why the included roses aren’t a more traditional red.

Roses can be grown in dozens of shades across almost the entire color spectrum, but the most common variety is the one that sells in abundance every February. However, that’s exactly why Anderson Grubb, lead designer of 10280 Flower Bouquet, opted for a more obscure light nougat.

“It was pretty obvious from the start that red roses for a lot of people are going to mean Valentine’s Day,” Anderson explained in a recent roundtable interview with some media fans, including Brick fanatics. “In fact, if we put red roses in the bouquet, it would become too specific for something that we want people to have for a long, long time.”

If you want red roses in your bouquet, however – especially as Valentine’s Day approaches – all is not lost. 40460 Roses constructs two individual flowers and is designed to accompany the 10280 flower bouquet, allowing you to customize your own arrangement however you see fit. But you’ll also notice that the roses in these two sets aren’t exactly equal.

“Their roses and ours boil down to designers’ preferences for how best to make a LEGO rose,” Anderson said. “It’s fun to see some of the choices they made, unlike ours, but they all look great together.”

This isn’t the only smaller LEGO flower set that arrived in January to complete the Botanical Collection. 40461 Tulips brings another plant into the mix – and one that Anderson says is also much better as its own produce, again mainly due to its seasonal nature.

“Tulips are associated with spring,” he explained. “We talked about it a lot. It seemed more appropriate to them to take some of these flowers which evoke specific occasions. For the bouquet, we wanted something that would give the impression that you could have [it] out for a very long time.
