INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Mother’s Day is only a few weeks away, so now is the time to start thinking about a gift for mom.

If you’re looking for something unique with a local twist, then a trip to a budding new business in Fountain Square might just give you just what you need.

“It was a former hair salon, but it needed a little love and someone to brighten it up again,” said owner Emily Sanders.

Growing up, Sanders knew she enjoyed working with flowers. Her mother was a florist and her grandparents were known throughout the neighborhood for their roses and their obvious talent for gardening.

When it was her turn to carry on the family tradition, she started small: she operated her flower business in Wildwood Market, which she and her husband Craig opened together three years ago.

“I made market bouquets every week. This little side business has kind of grown. We needed more space to make more weekly bouquets and then expand into wedding and special occasion orders, ”she explained.

So Sanders moved his thriving business to a storefront at 1225 Prospect Street. Blooms: A Floral Studio by Wildwood Market is quaint, almost studio-like. Inside, visitors will find friendly staff and a selection you won’t find anywhere.

“This is not your average bouquet of roses. They use fun local flowers. They use birds of paradise, spruce greens in winter. They really use fun ‘ingredients’ in their bouquets, ”said Brittany Smith of Yelp Indy.

You can pre-order any of their signature bouquets online and they’ll be ready within 48 hours. Or you can also try your hand at a truly personalized arrangement since Blooms by Wildwood Market offers the option of choosing flowers stem by stem.

They also have gifts that really give back, like the Restored Creations candles made inside of Wheeler Mission and Heart Felt Soaps.

“These were really meaningful to me because they help your women learn job skills and also give them jobs,” Sanders said.

Once you’ve picked the perfect gift, there are still plenty of other businesses to explore in this ever-changing neighborhood.

“Turchetti’s is soon opening its doors with gourmet meats and artisanal meats prepared just down the street. We have Onatah, which has fun gifts and succulents and a lot of great gifts for friends, ”Smith noted.
